How to Lease a Semi Truck

Many truck drivers lease their semi trucks.

Figure the cost of fuel, tires and regular maintenance before you lease a semi truck.

Check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure the dealer you are making a lease with is reputable (see Resources). Also, contact a bank or lending institution you are familiar with and trust.

Consider hiring on with an established trucking company that has a lease program. There are many financial positives such as fuel and permit allowances, but the lease is void if you leave the company.

Test-drive the truck you want to buy. If it is used, take it to a certified, competent mechanic to make sure there are no major mechanical issues.

Contact several insurance companies to get the best rate and coverage.

Make a contract arrangement to lease the semi truck on straight time or mileage basis. Find out if the bank or financial institution that owns the equipment has a buyback option after the lease expires.
